How do I decode a Chinese VIN?
To decode a Chinese VIN manually, read the 17 characters left to right: positions 1-3 identify the Chinese manufacturer (match the WMI code to the brand tables in this guide), positions 4-8 describe the model and specs (manufacturer-specific codes), position 9 is the check digit, position 10 is the model year (use the year code chart above), position 11 is the assembly plant, and positions 12-17 are the serial number. Do VIN numbers have the letter O or the number 0?
VIN numbers never contain the letter O — only the number 0 (zero). The letters I, O, and Q were deliberately excluded from the VIN character set because they look too similar to the digits 1 and 0. So whenever you see a round character in a VIN that could be O or 0, it is always the digit zero. This rule applies globally to every VIN on every vehicle, including all Chinese manufacturers.
